Captive Power Producers
The Duqam Refinery is a major industrial project located in the Duqam Special Economic Zone in Oman. Developed as a joint venture between Oman Oil Company and Kuwait Petroleum International, the refinery is a cornerstone of Oman’s economic diversification strategy. The facility is designed to process crude oil into a range of refined products, including diesel, jet fuel, naphtha, and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). The Plant is designed to refine 230,000 barrels of oil per day.
Key Issues
The Duqm Oil and Gas Management installed a 1X37 MVA turbine to ensure reliable on-site power, reducing dependence on external grids and enhancing energy independence. This strategic decision supports cost savings through efficient power generation and allows for future expansion. Additionally, the turbine helps the refinery comply with environmental regulations by providing a cleaner energy source tailored to the refinery’s current and future need.
Solution

EPESOL was awarded by GE with the commissioning of a 37 MVA turbine for the Duqm Refinery. EPESOL’s engineers play a crucial role in conducting the cold and hot commissioning of the turbine and power generation systems, synchronization, and power source reliability tests. Over nearly six months, they provided extensive manpower to ensure a reliable power supply, contributing to the overall operational efficiency and sustainability of the refinery. This project highlights EPESOL’s technical expertise in deploying advanced GE technology, supporting the refinery in meeting environmental standards, and reducing operational costs through improved energy management.

Conclusion

The Duqm Refinery project is a cornerstone of Oman’s economic diversification strategy, featuring advanced infrastructure and technology to meet global energy demands. With strategic partnerships and investments in reliable power solutions, such as the 37 MVA turbine, the refinery is poised to significantly boost the region’s economic growth, create job opportunities, and enhance Oman’s position in the global energy market.
